About this tool

Most people have a poor sense of where they actually sit in their own country. We compare ourselves with the people around us — colleagues, neighbours, whoever we follow online — and that group is rarely a fair sample of a national population. This tool replaces that intuition with a number drawn from published national statistics.

What it does

You give it a country, an age, a gender, a category and a value. It works out approximately what share of that country's adult population sits at or below you, and draws the whole distribution so you can see the shape you are sitting in — not just the number.

Seeing the shape matters more than the percentile. It is the difference between knowing you earn more than 70% of people and seeing how flat the curve is above you, or how steeply it drops away below.

What it is not

How uncertainty is handled

Every result names its source and says whether the figures came from a live API or the bundled dataset. Every category carries its specific caveat next to the result rather than buried in a footnote. Where a country has no data for a category, the tool says so instead of substituting a regional average — a fabricated comparison is worse than an absent one.

The methodology page lists every assumption and ranks the known limitations by severity. If a number here looks surprising, that page is the place to find out whether to believe it.

Privacy

The calculation runs entirely in your browser. The details you enter are never transmitted, logged, or stored anywhere. The only network request the tool makes is for a country's aggregate statistics — which asks "what are the figures for Germany", never anything about you. See the privacy policy for specifics.

Corrections

Statistical figures go out of date and transcription errors happen. If a number looks wrong, the methodology page names the exact source for each category so it can be checked against the original.
